Saints blank Lumberton, prep for Union

After winning what many consider to be the biggest game in St. Andrew's history the Saints are on the eve of another big game, this time against the Union Yellow Jackets.

Union has defeated Perry Central and Hinds AHS to advance to the quarterfinals of the MHSAA 2A state championship playoffs. The Yellow Jackets two wins have only come by a combined score of 14 points however. The two wins have improved Union's record to 10-2 for the season. The Yellow Jackets defeated Choctaw Central, Pelahatchie, Kemper County, Bay Springs, Newton, Scott Central, Philadelphia and Clarkdale in the regular season while falling to 1A Lake and Enterprise-Clarke.

Saint to play in South State semifinal Friday

Before the Saints could hit the practice field on Monday, television cameras were there to reminisce.

After arguably the biggest win in school history, a 17-0 shutout of the defending Class 2A state champions, St. Andrew's coach David Bradberry's mission is to bring his team down.

An estimated 3,000 fans crowded Roger Stribling Field on Friday night expecting an offensive explosion, but it was the St. Andrew's defense that lowered the boom.

Mathematically eliminated from the playoffs before Friday night's game ever started, the St. Joseph Bruins had nothing to lose as they squared off against Region 6-2A champion St. Andrew's.

The Bruins had tasted victory last year on the Saints' homefield but this year it was St. Andrew's who would deal out the losses.

By the numbers: Blackmon carried 19 times for 214 yards and five touchdowns (9, 44, 1, 27 and 13 yards) in a 41-6 victory over Hinds AHS in a key Region 6-2A game. For the season, Blackmon has rushed for 614 yards and scored 14 TDs for the Saints (5-1).

Quarterback Conway Craig ran for two scores and threw for another, and standout running back Bradford Blackmon ran 15 times for 181 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in a 39-21 win over St. Aloysius.

BLACKMON KEEPS IT GOING

St. Andrew's RB Bradford Blackmon scored two touchdowns in a 44-29 win over Yazoo County. Blackmon has 78 career touchdowns, tying him with Warren Central's Brian Darden (1992-94), Hancock's Terrance Goff (1987-91) and Ripley's Vashon Pearson (1998-2000). Weir's Dicenzo Miller holds the state record (118) set from 1994-97.
